Laurence Driggs Ely Jr. ’41

Body

Larry died on Dec. 8, 1987, and is survived by two sons, including Laurence III '67, and one daughter. A brother, John M. '42, is deceased.

Unfortunately, we were not in contact with Larry over the years and no information about his life and interests was obtainable from his family, so we can provide very little information here. In the past, however, we know that he was a member of the Princeton Club of San Diego and served as its treasurer and on its Schools Committee.

The class sends its sympathy to his family.

Joseph F. Koven '41

Joe died on Mar. 20, 1989, in L.A., where he had lived since the end of WWII. He came to Princeton from New Utrecht High School, in Brooklyn, majored in economics, and was a member of the Forensic Society, Whig-Clio, and the Debating Society.

Joe joined the Navy after graduation and went on active duty in Jan. 1942 as a V-7. Commissioned as an ensign, he served on a destroyer in all sectors of the Pacific and saw action at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Attu, Kiska, and Leyte Gulf. In 30 months overseas, he received six battle stars. Joe was separated as a lieutenant in Sept. 1945. Joe moved to California and spent his entire career in the retail trade. He was a partner in P. H. Woolf Co. and was associated with Lawson's Jewelers, in Beverly Hills.

He is survived by his widow, Beatrice, two sons, a daughter, and one grandson. The class extends to his family its heartfelt condolences.
