Laurence Turnbull Joline ’51

Body

Larry joined George Bass in underwater archaeological explorations of Byzantine shipwrecks off the Aegean coast of Turkey throughout the 1960s. Polly Doe and Larry were married in 1963, when he began teaching biology and coaching athletics at Blair Academy. In the 1980s, he and Polly retired to the family home in Southampton, N.Y.

Larry’s was an old Princeton family, with Jolines in the classes of 1827, 1834, 1870, and 1871. Mary Larkin, widow of Adrian Joline 1870, funded Joline Hall in memory of her husband.

Larry died April 8, 2008. He is survived by Polly; their daughter, Alice Metheson; son Dayton; stepdaughter Robin; two grandchildren; and his brother, John F. Joline III ’47, who led the family service for Larry at the family gravesite in Princeton Cemetery. With his passing, the class has lost one of its most loyal and beloved members.
