Lawrence Howard Bernstein ’67

LAWRENCE HOWARD BERNSTEIN, M.D., died in Denver Nov. 3, 1992, of a brain tumor. Larry was born in Jersey City Mar. 22, 1945. He came to Princeton from Clifford J. Scott H.S. in East Orange, N.J. He graduated with honors in biology, working with Prof. Lionel Rebhun, and rooming senior year with Jay Berman and josh Babad.

After graduating from Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1971, he trained there in pediatrics. Subsequent training in psychiatry at McMaster Univ. in Hamilton, Ontario, was followed by two years doing research at N.I.H. in Bethesda, Md., and by training in neurology at Beth Israel and Childrens' hospitals in Boston.

While in Boston, he was reunited with Robin Weiss, who he had dated while at Princeton. They were married in NYC in Dec. 1978. After (finally) finishing all of his training, he moved to Denver, where he spent the rest of his life. He practiced neurology and psychiatry until 1986, when he underwent surgery and radiotherapy for the brain tumor. He then practiced psychiatry in a limited way until, after doing very well with his illness for over six years, he relapsed.

Fighting his disease with the tenacity that characterized him his whole life, he underwent dangerous surgery to try to beat his tumor, even going to Philadelphia for experimental immunotherapy, but the disease proved too strong for him.

His sister, Carol, predeceased him, but he is survived by his parents, Irving and Natalie Bernstein, and by Robin and their three children, David, Noah, and Sarah Rachel, to all of whom the class offers deep sympathy.
