Leland Rodman Payton ’44

ROD PASSED AWAY at his home in La Jolla, Feb 3, 1992, after a long illness. He is survived by his widow, Euna; daughters Marilee Payton Talman, Claire, and Lynn; and sons Lee and Mark. There are three grandchildren.

Rod was born in St. Louis and raised in N.Y.C. At Princeton he majored in mechanical engineering and roomed with R. Young, D. Woodbridge, D. Korth, and T. Wolf. His club was Tower. He graduated in '43 and went on to Annapolis for O.T.C. He saw wartime sea duty on both oceans. After the war he worked for Reynolds Metal and was instrumental in the development of the aluminum seamless poptop can. He left Reynolds in 1969 and relocated in California, where he formed Rankin Manufacturing Inc., making machines and industrial materials. He retired after selling the company in 1985,
