Leonard Shirley ’40

Body

LEN SHIRLEY DIED of lung cancer in New Bern, N.C., Aug. 6, 1993, just one week after the death of his wife of 44 years, Jean.

Len came to Princeton from Edgewood (Penn.) H.S., where he played football and was senior class president. As a waiter in freshman commons, he made many close friends, among them Herb Shultz, with whom he roomed in 5 North Reunion as a sophomore and 113 Brown in junior and senior years. He majored in economics, was a member of Key and Seal, and earned his letter as a tackle on Harry Mahnken's championship 150lb. football teams.

During WWII, Len was a naval pilot, serving on antisubmarine patrols in the North and South Atlantic. Following a career as an insurance executive in South Bend and Fort Wayne, Ind., he moved to a retirement community in New Bern. There, he continued his interests in golf and bridge, and kept in contact with Princeton by attending our major reunions. Two Princetonianshis father, Rome '07, and his brother, David '43predeceased him.

Len's infectionous laughter, cheerful presence and Reunions, and warm personality, will indeed be sorely missed by many of his classmates and friends.

(Thanks to Len's lifelong friend, Herb Shultz, for his assistance with this memorial.)
