Leonidas George Gavalas ’34

LEE GAVALAS, who retired in 1970 as a major general, after 36 "wonderful, hardworking years with the U.S. Army" (as he described them), died Oct. 25, 1991, of respiratory failure. He was buried in Arlington Natl. Cemetery with full military honors.

In WWII Lee, a graduate of the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Penn., saw three years of service in the Mediterranean and European theaters. He was an assistant chief of staff with the V Corps in Germany and received the Legion of Merit and decorations from France, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, and the U.S.S.R. He associated with and came to know Gens. Eisenhower, Patton, and Bradley. When asked if he were a West Pointer, he used to reply, "Hell no! I graduated from a much better school!" His West Point confreres nevertheless appointed him an honorary West Pointer.

Surviving are his widow, Harriet Tsagaris Gavalas; a son, George L.; a daughter, Alethea Weimer; four grandchildren; one greatgrandchild; and a sister, Mary Gavalas, A brother, Thomas A. G. Gavalas '26 died in 1986.
