Lew died in his sleep on April 28, 2026.

The son of John N. 1924 and brother of John ’44, Lew came to Princeton from Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati, where he played tennis and swam. He majored in sociology, joined Quadrangle, and participated in multiple sports. He was famous as Princeton Charlie during the 1955 football season. Upon graduation, he married his childhood sweetheart, Noralee Thomas, and served two years in the Army, receiving his paratrooper wings.

Lew earned a law degree from Michigan in 1961 and joined the family law firm in Cincinnati, where he practiced for nearly 65 years. Lew was a storyteller and writer who produced many papers while becoming the longest serving member of the Literary Club of Cincinnati. In addition, he hosted two call-in radio programs on estate planning. Out of the office, Lew enjoyed fishing with family, playing bridge, and all racquet sports. He brought his eternal optimism and warm energy to all.

Lew is survived by his wife of 69 years, Noralee — who stood next to him in their kindergarten class photo — their children, Leah Gatch Tremonti (David), John (Jeri), and Elizabeth Gatch Wolfington; and seven grandchildren.
