Lewis John, retired professor of politics at Washington and Lee University, died suddenly Nov. 6, 2017, at age 80.

John graduated from Washington and Lee in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. A Fulbright scholar at the University of Edinburgh from 1958 to 1959, he earned an MPA degree from Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School in 1961 and a Ph.D. from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University in 1973.

An ROTC graduate, he served in the Army from 1961 to 1963 and commanded a Nike Hercules Battery in Edgemont, Pa. In 1963 he returned to W&L as assistant dean of students and director of financial aid. He was dean of students from 1969 to 1990. At that point, he turned to full-time teaching, specializing in U.S. government and public administration, and British politics.

A member of many professional and honor societies, John served on the Lexington (Va.) school board, the Joint Committee for Control of Lexington High School, the Rockbridge Area Drug Council, and the Planning District Drug Abuse Council. The W&L undergraduate class of 1958 established the Class of 1958 Lew and Annette John Honor Scholarship.

John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Annette; two sons; and five grandchildren.
