Lewis J. Hutton died Oct. 8, 1993, in Kingston, R.I. He was 72. He had been a professor of Hispanic studies at the Univ. of Rhode Island for 24 years before retiring in 1989. Dr. Hutton, a 1942 graduate of Columbia, got a master of divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1944, and got his doctorate from Princeton in Romance languages. He was an ordained Presbyterian minister and a member of the presbytery of southern New England. Concurrently, Dr. Hutton was a respected scholar of Spanish literature, who published numerous papers and articles, and two books, Teresa de Cartagena and The Christian Essence of Spanish Literature. In the latter, he describes "the hidden spring" of Christian inspiration in Spanish literature. Dr. Hutton is survived by his widow, Irene C.; two sons, Paul C. '76 and Peter A.; two daughters, Elaine C. Woodward and Jane E.; two brothers, Robert W. and John W. '51; and seven grandchildren. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family of this remarkable teacher and scholar.
