Lewis Mack ’25
After a long illness, our highly esteemed class president, Lew Mack, died in New Canaan, Conn., on Aug. 30, 1989. Born in Somerville, N.J., on Apr. 3, 1903, he came to us from the Hill School and distinguished himself as one of our most outstanding leaders—on the soccer and gym teams, in the Banjo Club, on the Daily Princetonian board, and on the Senior Council. He also was president of Cap and Gown and the Inter-Club Committee and was class historian. He served as a counselor at the Princeton summer camp for two summers and graduated with honors in English.
Lew roomed all four years with Bill Oliver and Harvey Phillips, and after graduation, they went around the world on a British freighter. Following an apprenticeship in financial journalism, he became a pioneer in investment counseling and a founding partner of Beck ('26), Mack and Oliver, with whom he was associated until he retired 50 years later.
In 1938, he married Grace Hayward and moved to New Canaan, where he served the community on the board of education, as president of the water company, and as V.P. of the country club. He as an ardent golfer, fisherman, and skier, and was involved in the American Society of Natural History.
The class extends deepest sympathy to Grace, their sons Talbot '61 and John '64, their daughter Lucy, and eight grandchildren.
