Lionel Valdema Silvester Jr. ’45

Body

VAL SILVESTER died 24, 1991, at his home in Princeton. Val was born in Princeton, a fourth generation Princetonian, his father having been a member of the Class of'13. Interestingly enough, he did not start with our Class at Princeton, but began his college career at Penn State, transferring to his father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather's alma mater after his first year.

Val served as a pilot with the Sixth Air Force in the Panama Canal Zone and then took his Princeton degree, married the former Jeanne Doyle in 1947, and took a graduate degree in banking at Rutgers. Val began his career with the Corn Exchange Bank in New York and later was with the First Nail. Iron Bank of Morristown, N.J. He joined the Princeton Bank & Trust Company in 1952 and remained there until his 1989 retirement. He served as senior trust officer and regional manager of the Princeton office.

Val was a member of the Nassau Club, the Springdale Golf Club, and the Old Guard of Princeton. He served on the Princeton University Chapel Council, was a onetime treasurer of the Youth Tennis Foundation, and was a director of the Princeton Historical Society. In addition he served as trustee of a number of foundations, including Princeton's Prospect Foundation.

Val is survived by Jeanne, a wellknown Princeton author and broadcaster active in many aspects of the community; by a son, Lionel Valdemar III; and by brothers Walter'39 and G. Frederick. The Class extends its sympathy to Jeanne and the family.
