Logan Chappell Bostian ’44 *49

Logan died April 8, 2010, in Williamsburg, Va. He was 87.

A chemistry major at Princeton, he roomed with Bob Claytor, Ben Burns, and Tom Wolf. He was president of the University Band, treasurer of Cloister Inn, winner of the McKay Prize for Physical Chemistry and a Sayre Fellowship, and a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma XI societies.

While in the Army during World War II, Logan worked simultaneously on the Manhattan Project at Princeton and for his Ph.D. in chemistry. In 1947, he joined Allied Chemical Corp. in Morristown, N.J., and married Julia Jolliffe. She died two years after giving birth to their son, William Jolliffe Bostian ’71.

Logan married Patricia Montenyohl in 1953 and they had a son, Lawrence, and a daughter, Andrea. He became director of laboratory research at Allied in 1962, and ultimately senior scientist in 1968.

In 1971, he joined Virginia Chemicals in Portsmouth, Va., becoming director of research in 1975. He retired in 1985 and moved to Williamsburg, Va., where he enjoyed golf and music, especially Wagnerian operas and singing in the Bruton Parish Choir.

He is survived by Patricia; his children; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
