Louis D. Simonds Jr. ’26

Body

LOUIS SIMONDS, a lifelong resident of Charleston, S.C., died at his home there on June 10, 1989, after a long bout with cancer. He was a graduate of Gilman School and at Princeton was a member of Cap and Gown Club.

Lou entered the insurance business after graduation and formed the Carolina General Insurance Agency, with which he was associated until he retired in 1968. During WWII, he was in the Navy, serving in the Naval Air Transport Service in both the Pacific and American areas. He left the service as a lieutenant commander. Lou was well known in Charleston and had many outside interests, including the Kiwanis Club. He was an active churchman and served St. Lukes in Charleston on the vestry and as senior warden. He also served as president of the Clergy Society of South Carolina and treasurer of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina.

Lou is survived by his widow, the former Frances Adams, whom he married in 1950, and his brother, Albert R., of Charleston, to whom we extend our sympathy.
