LOUIS HAWES JR., professor of art history at the Univ. of Indiana, died Nov. 8, 1993, in Bloomington, Ind. He was 62. Prof. Hawes attended the Eastman School of Music and got his bachelor's at the Univ. of Rochester. He got his Ph.D. from Princeton in art history. He studied at the Courtaulds Institute in London as a Fulbright fellow.

Specializing in 18th- and 19th-century European painting, Prof. Hawes taught at Columbia before he went to the Univ. of Indiana. He wrote many journal articles and catalogs for painting exhibitions he organized. He is survived by his widow, Diana; sons Christopher and Daniel; and a brother Richard E.; to whom we extend our heartfelt sympathy.
