THE CLASS of 1923 lost a distinguished and honored member who had earned his varsity "P" in life, when Mac Fisher died at home in Cockeysville, Md., on Dec. 30, 1989, after a brief illness.

McLane, who was born in Ruxton, Md., Aug. 3, 1901, was part of a Princeton legacy. He had relatives in the Classes of 1885, 1896, 1918, 1920, and 1923, including his father, D. K. Este Fisher 1883, and his brother, D. K. Este '13. McLane grew up in Baltimore and attended Gilman, where he served on the news board and managed the soccer team. At Princeton he belonged to the gym and track squads and was chairman of the schools committee. He belonged to Clio Hall and Ivy Club.

After graduation Mac spent three more years on campus, studying architecture. During his early career he was a supervisor of construction for the U.S. state department, on duty in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Mac later settled in Baltimore, joining the firm of Palmer and Lamdin. He designed the Baltimore SUN building and numerous homes in Baltimore. After Dec. 7, 1941, Mac became an officer in the U.S. army engineer corps. He was promoted to lt. Colonel. Out of uniform Mac founded his own firm and designed the building for Princeton's architecture school. He became a fellow of the American Inst. of Architects, serving as president of the Baltimore chapter, and was a member of the Princeton architecture school's Advisory Council.

He enjoyed fishing and duck hunting. He belonged to the Green Spring Valley Hunt Club, Bachelors Cotillion, and Century Assn. in N.Y.C. Betty Tailor Griswold became Mac's bride Sept. 7, 1934. He is survived by her, his daughter Betsy Matthai and three sons, L. McLane Jr., D. K. Este III, and Alexander G., 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mac's classmates share with Betty and the Fisher clan their pride in the successful life of a truly great citizen of our country, who died having lived life to the fullest.
