MACFARLAND LAFFERTY CATES died at his home on Feb. 2, 1993, at the age of 94. He lived in Spartanburg, S.C., all his life and for many years served as chairman and C.E.O. of Arkwright Mills, a textile firm founded by his father. His son MacFarland Jr. '49 now serves as president and treasurer. Mac served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWI and transferred into our Class from V.M.L at the beginning of sophomore year. He was a member of Quadrangle Club.

Mac was an important leader in the American Textile Manufacturing Assn. He also served on many hospital, educational, and charitable boards in the state of South Carolina. MacJr. said of him, "My father, throughout his life, was a devoted Princetonian. I was fortunate to enjoy many pleasant times shooting grouse and pheasants abroad, as well as quail in this country, with the Old Buc. There are many pleasant memories that I will cherish for a long time," Mac's wife, Mary Dupre, predeceased him, but he is survived by his son, four granddaughters, and two greatgrandchildren.
