MacKinnon Ellis ’24
Kinney was born in 1903 and spent most of his life in Swarthmore, Penn., where he developed a lifelong love for nature, especially birds. He died Oct. 25, 1993. He graduated from Culver Military Academy, Princeton, and Penn Medical School.
At Princeton, he was a member of the Triangle Club and played in the famous jazz band. He was a member of the lacrosse team that won the championship senior year. He was also a fellow in medicine from 1921-31.
From 1942-47, he served in the Navy, attaining the rank of commander. In the Solomon Islands, he injured his back, an incident that encouraged him to join the V.A. Medical Service as chief of the medical services in Mountain Home, Tenn., where he was certified by the board of internal medicine.
He went on to serve as chief of staff at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction, Vt., which was connected with Dartmouth's Hitchcock Clinic; the Veterans Hospital in West Haven, Conn.; with Yale; and with the V.A. Hospital in Martinez, Calif. While at West Haven, he became an associate professor of medicine at Yale Medical School. He returned to Mountain Home V.A. Hospital in 1957 and worked there as a consultant until his retirement at the age of 80.
Kin and his wife, Kel, were married for 65 years and had ten happy years of retirement, enjoying the gardens, the flowers, and even the baking (brioche a specialty). He is survived by her, by son Matthew, daughter Deborah, sister Margaret Ellis, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
