Malcolm S. Forbes ’41

Body

MALCOLM'S DEATH on Feb. 24, 1990, and his considerable accomplishments were so extensively recorded in all forms of media that readers of this publication must be aware of his "life and times." In the Apr. 5 PAW, there was an account of his activities as an undergraduate, his service as a trustee of the University, and his generous gifts to Princeton.

His classmates, therefore, take this most personal of Princeton traditions as an opportunity to voice sentiments of gratitude and appreciation for friendship that began during undergraduate years and continued to the time of his death. Malcolm's path intersected that of more '41ers than most realized. Almost without exception, the associations are remembered as pleasant and helpful. Beginning with our landmark 25th-reunion Annual Giving campaign, Malcolm was an adviser, worker, and contributor in major reunion efforts, in which 1941 often set outstanding records.

The Forbes family Christmas cards depicted a progression of events and family growth that took on a deeper significance for those of us present in St Bartholomew's Church on Mar. 1. On that occasion, each of Bertie and Malcolm's five children spoke about their extensive, widely differing activities with Malcolm, his encouragement of their individual pursuits, and, above all, their affection for their father and one another.

We will miss Malcolm at our 50th celebration in June 1991. We know he was looking forward to it, because two weeks before he died, Malcolm wrote to a classmate suggesting that we get our 50th-reunion A.G. program off to a good start with a party at the Forbes Galleries.
