Marion W. Bagwell Jr. ’52

Body

AFTER SEVERAL HEART ATTACKS, Mike Bagwell died at home in Reidsville, N.C., June 24, 1993. His funeral was held in Main St. Methodist Church in Reidsville and his ashes were scattered at sea.

Born Sept. 9, 1926, Mike graduated from the McCallie School in Chattanooga and he served in the navy and merchant marine and attended Georgia Tech and the Univ. of Alabama before entering Princeton. At Princeton, Mike majored in politics and belonged to Cottage Club.

Junior year, Mike left Princeton to work in his family's steel-fabrication business. He and Gene-Watt Stokes were married on Oct. 4, 1952; they had met on Houseparties weekend, when Mike was picking and singing his favorite country ballads.

Beyond music and business, Mike was devoted to his family and to politics. He served on the Alabama State Democratic Executive Committee and was a Lyndon Johnson delegate to the Democratic Natl. Convention in L.A. Our reunion books reveal Mike's deep concern for the integrity of governmental process. Mike traveled extensively with his family in Europe, and for two years lived in Ireland, where he managed a fabrication plant. He retired from Isometrics in 1991 and became chairman.

Mike is survived by Gene-Watt; his children, Marion W. III, Sarah Lindsey, and Virginia Stokes; and seven grandchildren. To them, we extend our sympathies.
