Mark Crane ’52

Mark died July 29, 2025, in Kensington, Md.
He came to us from New Trier High School. At Princeton, Mark was a member and president of Whig-Clio, named senior class orator, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He served in the Navy during the Korean War, then went on to study law at Harvard, where he met his wife, Constance (Radcliffe ’56). He practiced at Hopkins Sutter in Chicago for 44 years until it merged with a national firm. He went on to teach legal ethics at Loyola University Law School.
At the firm, Mark became a nationally recognized antitrust lawyer and federal court litigator in cases both civil and criminal. He was elected to numerous positions: chairman of the antitrust section of the American Bar Association, president of the Seventh Circuit Bar Association, chairman of the Illinois State Bar Federal Judicial Appointments Committee, chairman of the Illinois Committee of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and various other committees appointed by the federal courts in Chicago.
Mark and Connie were active in their church, were avid collectors of Indigenous Peoples and Asian art, traveled extensively, and were regulars at Reunions. He held several volunteer jobs with community organizations in Winnetka, having lived there for most of his adult life, before moving to Maryland to be close to his family.
The class sends good wishes on the loss of our distinguished classmate to his children: Chris (Kit), Kathy (Glenn) Cowan, and Stephanie ’85 (Greg ’85) Guyett; grandchildren: Eliza, Matthew, Blair (Sean) Peterson, Sara Cowan, Michael (Jenny) Cowan, Patrick Cowan, Charlotte Guyett ’13, Douglas Guyett ’16, and Lucy Guyett; and great-grandchildren Carter Peterson and Alexander Cowan.
