MARTIN C. HOFFMAN lost his battle with cancer on Nov. 2, 1989, in the Latrobe Area Hospital in Pennsylvania.

He was born Dec. 27, 1912, in Short Hills, NJ. He came to Princeton from Kent School. He majored in architecture, roomed all four years in Lockhart with Pat Humphrey, and was a member of Ivy. On graduation he went on to Harvard Law School and graduated in 1938.

He joined the N.Y. firm of Jackson, Fuller, Brophy, Barringer and Brooks. With time out for the war, he remained with them until 1958 when he joined the Pittsburgh National Bank from which he retired a V.P.

An R.O.T.C. graduate, he was called to active duty in early 1942. He served with distinction in the War Department and in the Allied Headquarters staff in Africa and Italy. He was awarded the Legion of Merit by the U.S., the M.B.E. by the British, and Italian Legion of Merit. He retired a lt. colonel.

He is survived by his wife, the former Eileen Lucy, his son, Martin Colden Hoffman Jr. of Littleton, Col., his daughter, Eileen (Mrs. Raymond R. Christman) of Camp Hill, Penn., and four grandchildren.

He was a resident of Ligonier, Penn., a member of Rolling Rock, St. Michael's of the Valley, and a prominent horticulturalist.
