Mary Starritt Hall *68
Hall graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Smith College in 1958, and in 1959 received a master’s in English from the University of Vermont. After being a member of the English faculty at Vermont for 34 years, Hall retired as a professor emerita in 1994. She had specialized in the works of John Milton and William Blake, and authored the book, Materialism and the Myths of Blake .
After Hall successfully completed her oral examination in November 1967, she had her Ph.D. degree approved in January 1968. At that time, only five other women had received doctoral degrees from Princeton.
She was formally conferred her degree in June 1968. Noteworthy also is that Hall and her husband raised four young children during her doctoral pursuit.
She is survived by Robert, her husband of 49 years; six children, Timothy, Pamela, Christopher, Jennifer, Nicholas, and Jonathan ’82; and 10 grandchildren.
