Matthew Pollack ’64

Body

Matt died Jan. 30, 2011, after a 13-year battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Matt’s family moved from New York City to Maryland when he was young, and he graduated from Baltimore’s Forest Park High School. A Woodrow Wilson School major and Campus Club member, he was active in Whig-Clio and Orange Key. He cherished the wonderful times spent with his roommates, Rick Trowbridge, Chris Walters, Johnny Amesse, Paul Tull, and Tom Childers. Matt earned a medical degree from Johns Hopkins and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in infectious diseases, and it was during this time that he met his wife of almost 40 years, Kathie.

After service in the Navy Medical Corps, he joined the faculty of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, where he became a full professor and served on the faculty for over three decades. He authored almost 200 scientific publications and held a number of patents related to his research interests. In 2008, Matt became a professor emeritus. He enjoyed many happy days over the years at Princeton, visiting his son, Josh ’99, and attending Reunions.

Matt was devoted to his family. He is survived by Kathie and Josh, to whom the class extends its deepest sympathy.
