Melville H. Bearns Jr. ’27

Body

WE HAVE just received word of Buss's death Apr. 20, 1992, of heart failure at his farm in Warrenton, Va.

Buss left Princeton in Feb. 1925 to study history for two years at Oxford Univ. He came to Princeton from Hotchkiss. For many years he lived on his farm in Warrentown, training and showing race horses and running a large beef cow and calf herd. In WWII he enlisted in the Cavalry and served as an instructor at Texas A. and M. and Oldahoma A. and M. colleges, rising to the rank of captain.

In 1932, he married Julia Keith, who bore him two sons, Melville III and Stuyvesant. In 1965, he married Le Earle Drake. He also is survived by five grandchildren. He served as vicechairman of the Virginia State Education Board from 1960 to 1970.

In his later years, he spent much time at the Ocean Reef Club on Key Largo, Fla., pursuing sailfish from his own boat.

The Class's sympathy goes out to his widow, children, and grandchildren.
