Mel died Aug. 30, 1994, in Toledo, Ohio. He was 81. He prepared at Lawrenceville, and at Princeton, he majored in philosophy and was a member of Cannon Club. He received his law degree from the Univ. of Michigan.

He was the third generation of the Lewis family law firm, Doyle, Lewis and Warner, in Toledo. His grandfather cofounded the firm in 1884. Mel specialized in estate planning, probate, and real-estate law. He was a 50-year member of the Toledo and American Bar associations.

He was a board member of the Conlon Center, the Toledo Dental Dispensary, Woodlawn Cemetery, and the former Child and Family Agency, for which he served as board president. He was a member of the Hermits Club, Toledo Club, and the Toledo Country Club, the latter of which he served as secretary for 50 years.

He will be missed by those who knew him for his gentleness, humor, and the sense of dignity with which he conducted his personal and professional life.

Mel is survived by his widow Joan Gipe Lewis, whom he married in 1944; daughter Mary Lewis Geiger; sons John G. and Frank S. II; and eight grandchildren.
