Michael MacDonald Mooney ’52

Body

MIKE MOONEY died Nov. 18, 1985, following an extended siege with a brain tumor. At his memorial service in the chapel of Georgetown Univ., he was eulogized by the editor of HARPER'S, to which he had been a contributor.

Mike devoted his life to a clearer understanding of the American culture. He served as senior editor at the SATURDAY EVENING POST, and contributed to HARPER'S, ATLANTIC MONTHLY, and TRAVEL AND LEISURE. He was the author of GEORGE CATLIN: LETTERS AND NOTES ON THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS, and THE HINDENBURG.

In 1972, while serving as executive director of the Citizens Committee for a Better New York, he became fascinated with the story of Stanford White and Evelyn Nesbitt. From the dust cover of EVELYN NESBITT AND STANFORD WHITE: "Mr. Mooney paints magic portraits of Stanford White and Evelyn Nesbitt ... against a realistic landscape of the tumultuous years when America gave up its innocence."

A graduate of Andover, Mike transferred to Georgetown Univ. to complete his undergraduate degree. He is survived by his widow, Anne, and their four children, Michael Jr., Laird, Christopher, and Ellen. To them we offer our deepest sympathies.
