Mortimer Henry Chute III ’56

Mort died April 10, 2010. He was the consummate husband and family man, friend, Princetonian, and businessman.

After four outstanding years at Princeton, Mort never let his ties with the University loosen. He served as chairman of the Alumni Council and the graduate board of Cap and Gown; vice president and reunion committee chairman for the class; vice president of ReachOut 56/81; organizer of four mini-reunions; vice president of the Princeton Club of New York; and chairman of the Alumni Schools Committee of Long Island. It’s no wonder Mort was elected a 1956 Distinguished Classmate.

Mort served in the Marine Corps after graduation, rising to the rank of major. After his discharge, he joined the office-supply company Bainbridge, Kimpton & Haupt and served as president of the National Wholesale Stationers Association. He later was vice president of the U.S. committee for UNICEF, and concluded his business career as senior vice president of Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Mort is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Jane, whom he met shortly after matriculating at Princeton in 1952. He also leaves daughters Catherine ’81, Elizabeth ’83, Dorothy ’85, and Margaret; three sons-in-law; eight grandchildren; and a host of Princeton comrades.
