Mortimer Worth Glover III ’46

Mortimer W. Glover III died in Augusta, Ga., Feb. 13, 2009. He was 84.

Born in Hartsville, S.C., to the Rev. Mortimer Glover Jr. and Gladys E. Alexandra, Mort entered Princeton in the fall of 1942 and graduated with honors in philosophy in 1946. He waited tables at Commons, sang in the choir (including twice at Carnegie Hall), played bass in the orchestra and band, and fenced.

Following graduation, he entered Virginia Theological Seminary and earned a master of divinity degree in 1949. He was, at age 25, one of the youngest Episcopal priests ever ordained. In 1959 he earned an additional master’s degree at the General Theological Seminary in New York City.

Mort was deeply religious and had a rich and varied career in Asheboro, N.C., New York City, and Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. In 1976 he became the rector of St. Steven’s Episcopal Church in New Harmony, Ind., from which he retired to Augusta after 40 years of service. He was a voracious reader and a consummate scholar with an abiding interest in music and the arts.

Mort is survived by his wife of 41 years, Eugenia Toole Glover; a sister, Margaret Ernest; and three brothers, Joseph, Homer, and Irving.
