Neil Pfanstiel, a former officer at Aetna Life and Casualty Co., died Dec. 7, 2015, at age 98.

Pfanstiel graduated from Trinity College in 1938. He earned a master’s degree in classics from Princeton in 1940, and then taught at Hampden-Sydney College from 1940 to 1941, after which he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served as a captain based in England.

After his discharge, he taught at Yale from 1946 to 1947 and began working at Aetna soon after. He also served in the Connecticut Air National Guard from 1947 to 1953 and was called up for duty during the Korean War, separating with the rank of major.

Pfanstiel returned to Aetna, rising to assistant vice president in the bond department, before retiring in 1980. He enjoyed world traveling, vacationing in Florida, and classical music. Having learned to play the saxophone at age 9, he had been a young professional in several bands.

He was predeceased in 1988 by his wife, Evy, whom he had married in 1942. He is survived by his longtime friend, Annette S. Mead, and her family.
