Nelson Whitaker Wagner ’30
NELSON DIED on Oct. 19, 1989, in his hometown of Wheeling, W.V. He came to Princeton from Lawrence¬ville, where he starred on the track team and in football and was nominated in 1926 to be the sixth member of the school Hall of Fame. Nelson was also active in these sports at Princeton. He majored in geology and was a member of Cap and Gown. He would respond when addressed as "Nels" or "Bud."
After some foreign travel he settled down in Wheeling and worked for the Wheeling Steel Corp. as a produc¬tion engineer and in other capacities. Except for the war years, which he spent in the Marines in Quantico and Cherry Point, N.C., he stayed with Wheeling Steel until retirement in June 1966. Nels was active in the P.A.A. of Upper Ohio Valley, serving as secretary-treasurer and as a member of the schools committee. Contact with class¬mates was limited but in 1968 Bud wrote to Chuck Baton with the comment "my first note in 38 years." Albert C. Whitaker Jr. '27 was Nelson's cousin.
Survivors include his wife, Joan (9 Patricia Dr., Wheel¬ing W.V. 26003); a son, N. Whitaker Jr., a daughter, Firth W. Walden, two sisters, Elsie Wardman, Sallie Wagner; and four grandchildren. To them we extend our deepest sympathy.
