Newcombe Chandler Baker Jr. ’45

NEWT BAKER died Oct. 16, 1992, at Abington Memorial Hospital at the age of 70. Newt, who entered Princeton from St. Paul's, was the greatgrandson of John Fairfield Dryden, founder of the Prudential Life Insurance Company. His grandfather, Forrest F., was later president of Prudential.

At Princeton, Newt was a member of Cottage Club and played freshman and varsity hockey. A great claim to fame was that he successfully stale the clapper from the cupola of Nassau Hall. During WVAI, Newt served in the Pacific, seeing combat with the Third and Sixth Marine Divisions at Guam, Okinawa, and Midway. After a brief stint with an advertising agency in New York, he joined Yale & Towne in 1953 in their Philadelphia office as advertising and sales promotion manager. One of his first assignments was to manage the Yale & Towne Traveling Road Show, the first of its type in the industry. This was a selfcontained operation in two tractor trailers, which carried a huge tent and nine pieces of materials handling equipment. It visited major cities in the U.S. to demonstrate Yale Industrial Lift Trucks and Hoisting Equipment. At the time of his death, Newt was Merchandising Manager for Yale Materials Handling Corp. in Flemington, N.J.

Newt continued his hockey prowess for many years, following his Princeton career, as a member of the Wissahickon Skating Club in Chestnut Hill, where he was chairman of the hockey program. He was a member of the board of the Fox Chase Cancer Center and, with his wife Icie, he enjoyed the somewhat esoteric hobby of house restoration and interest in antique furniture.

Newt is survived by Icie and by their sons Newcombe C. III and Brinton E., three grandchildren, and two sisters, Barbara Greene and Marion Sloan, to all of whom the Class extends its deep sympathy.
