Newton Phillips Frye Jr. ’40

Body

PROMINENT CHICAGO LAWYER and former professional sports representative Phil Frye died Mar. 27, 1994. He prepared at New Trier H.S. At Princeton, he was soccer manager of 1940's successful team and he participated widely in interclub sports as a Key and Seal member.

Phil completed Northwestern Univ. Law School, interrupted by three years' navy duty as a destroyer officer. He then worked for Shiff, Hardin & Waite, became a partner in 1952, and remained with the firm until his death. He was counsel to a variety of notable clients, including the White Sox, the Bulls, the Cubs, and Bears, as well as Dean Whitter Reynolds, Merrill Lynch, and Pepsi Cola. At one time, Phil was part owner and v.p. of the White Sox and part owner of the Bulls.

Phil treasured his years at Princeton as a member of the class. He was unable to attend our 50th reunion, but wrote he would "be thinking of friends and former classmates on the big weekend," and wished "good health and happiness to all."

Phil's survivors include his widow, Eleanor; a daughter, Pamela Holmes; three sons, Newton P. III, Peter, and David; and nine grandchildren. To them all, we extend our deep sympathy at the loss of this upstanding and well-respected individual.
