Paul E. Smith Jr. ’32

Body

PAUL EDGAR SMITH, one of our truly creative classmates, died Nov. 30, 1993, of chronic lung disease in his hometown, Newark, Del.

After graduating, Paul earned a master's from Columbia Teachers College and taught in the Wilmington area for several years. He then became a biophysicist at DuPont Co., retiring in 1975 after 40 years with them. His work in human physiology included developing biomedical equipment.

His professional competence carried over into other fields, including baseball; he developed an electronic bat that was used to analyze batting styles of the Phillies, to help the players improve their batting averages. He was a founding member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Brandywine Hundred; he was a charter appointee to the Delaware Radiation Authority; he had been a member of the Newark chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous since 1980; and he was active in several Arden Folk Guilds, playing the tuba in the Arden Orchestra.

Paul was known as the Methuselah of our class, leaving four daughters, 10 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He is survived by his former wife, Eve Reid; his daughters Priscilla B. Witke, Natalie H., Reid S. Suchanec, and Krista M. Meinersmann; and many other descendants, to all of whom the class extends its sincere condolences.
