Paul Henry Ringer Jr. ’39
Paul died on Mar. 27, 1989, at Wrightsville Beach, N.C., where he had lived since he retired as a general surgeon. In retirement, he had been active in the public-education program of the U.S. Coast Guard Artillery.
Paul received his M.D. from the Vanderbilt School of Medicine in 1943 and then served in the E.T.O. with the Army Medical Corps until 1946. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a fellow in the American College of Surgeons. For the next 15 years, until he decided to give up his private practice, he was a partner in the Davis Medical Clinic, in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. Instead, in his own words, he found a haven in the well-regulated ways of institutional medicine in the VA Hospital in Fayetteville, N.C. It was like a homecoming for him. He had been born in Asheville, and he was happy to rediscover the enjoyable living and climate of his native state.
Paul and Norma Gayle Newcomb, a graduate of the Univ. of Iowa School of Nursing, were married in 1944, and they had five children and five grandchildren. Watching the development of their family was a source of particular satisfaction for Paul. We extend our sympathy and continuing friendship to Norma, to daughters Patricia (Mrs. Joseph Hardy) and Margaret (Mrs. Roger Hendrix), and to sons David, Robert, and Donald.
