Paul Mecray ’30

Body

Paul left us on Sept. 1, 2010.

He was born July 1, 1908, in Camden, N.J., where his father was a practicing surgeon. After Penn Charter, the oldest Quaker school, he came to Princeton, where he was a member of Clio. He ate his meals at Charter.

After receiving his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School he married Justine Eiseman, and then reported to Mayo for fellowships that led to a postgraduate master of science degree. Later he practiced with his father. When war broke out, Paul joined the Penn Reserve Surgical Unit. He served with the 20th General Hospital in Burma, and as medical officer with Merrill’s Marauders and Mars Task Force behind Japanese lines, ending as a major and earning a Silver Star.

Postwar in New Jersey he was founder and president of the New Jersey Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, and also of a large surgical group. After retiring in 1975, Paul and Justine traveled, skied, hunted, and fished. In later years they moved to Medford Leas in Medford, N.J.

Paul lived out Princeton’s motto: in the nation’s service and in the service of all nations. Justine died in 2007. To his children, grandchildren, and great-grandson, we send our deep sympathy.
