Paul Newton Wonacott ’61

Body

BORN IN Portland, Ore., Aug. 7, 1939, our respected and well-loved classmate, Paul Wonacott, died of cancer in his Portland home on May 24, 1991.

Paul came to us from Andover. When he was not busy honing his talents as an English major or hitchhiking home to Oregon for Christmas, Paul was forging friendships with fellow Princetonians that continued until his death. He was a member of Tiger Inn. Following graduation from Princeton, Paul was awarded a Carnegie grant to study in Vienna, Austria. He graduated from Stanford Univ. Law School in 1965.

Paul lived a life of accomplishment, adventure, and devotion to his family, who were intimately involved in all of his pursuits. He was associated for a quarter-century with the law firm of Wood, Tatum, Wonacott & Landis; had been a senior partner since 1970; and was an internationally recognized maritime lawyer who practiced, lectured, and wrote internationally.

Paul was an avid outdoorsman who involved his family and friends in his varied outdoor pursuits. Those of you who have climbed mountains, cut firewood, built teepees, forded streams, shot rapids, cross-country skied, and closed down the Nehalem gin mill with Paul know the meaning of "endurance" and "elastic limit" -- everyone wanting to quit but no one daring to admit it.

Paul is survived by his widow, Lynda; sons Peter, Evan, and Timothy; daughter Andrea; mother, Ruth; and sister Gaynor Wall. We extend our deepest sympathies to each of them.
