Paul Smith Olmstead ’19
PAUL OLMSTEAD was born in Wilton, Conn., in 1898 and in 1970 he retired to Winter Park, Fla., where he died June 14, 1993.
By his own description, Paul was an engineering statistician. To his friends, he was a mathematical BRAIN. To the Bell Telephone lab, he was a valuable part of the business. He entered so many avenues and acquired so many honors in his chosen field that the recitation would fill a book.
To his 1919 B.S. degree, he added a Ph.D. from Princeton. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church and the University Club.
He married Ethelwynn Walker, a graduate of Hood, in 1923. She predeceased him. They leave two children, Blair Eugene '49 and Jean 0. Witherington (Hood '58); a halfbrother; a halfsister; five grandchildren; and eight greatgrandchildren. The class has lost a distinguished member and a loyal friend.
