Peter Hail Brown ’62

He entered Princeton from Sir Francis Drake High School in San Anselmo, Calif.

A math major, charter member of the Woodrow Wilson Society, and Commons waiter, Peter always held numerous jobs.

His senior-year roommates were Randy Kelly, Tad Dadisman, and John Ogden. Randy, John, and Leland Yee were at Peter’s bedside June 2.

Peter spent his career teaching mathematics and coaching various sports at independent private schools, mostly in the Washington, D.C., area. He was a resourceful and dedicated teacher as well as a forthright and determined department head. He pioneered computer programming in secondary-school classrooms with the digital revolution in the late 1960s. Among numerous teaching honors, Peter was a finalist for the 1986 Presidential Award for Teaching.

He retired to Topsfield in 2002, where he and Judy, his wife of 47 years, had summered since 1977. A talented craftsman, he beautifully restored their old Maine farmhouse, enjoyed rural life, and traveled.

The class extends its sympathy to Judy; Peter’s mother, Beth Brown; son Jeffrey; daughter Jennifer; four grandchildren; and five siblings.
