Peter A. Salm ’50

PETER SALM DIED Mar. 12, 1994, at the Mount Sinai Hospital in N.Y.C. after a long struggle with viral hepatitis. Born in N.Y.C., he spent most of his youth in St. Anton, Austria. He was the son of Millicent Rogers and Davis Cup tennis champion Count Ludwig von Salm-Hoogstraeten of Austria.

Peter prepared at Groton School, then served in military intelligence in the European Theater. At Princeton, he majored in history and was a member of Colonial Club. After graduation, he worked for the State Dept.

Peter's 1200acre estate in Southampton, which he inherited from his grandfather in 1945, is believed to be the largest private estate on Long Island. He was in the forefront of private conservation efforts, and his stewardship over the area and the wetlands was extraordinary. He was a lifelong member of the Nature Conservancy.

Peter is survived by his wife of 2 5 years, Wiltraud von FurstenbergSalm; daughter MariaAntonia; son KarlLudwig; and two halfbrothers, Arturo and Paul PeraltaRamos. To all of them the class extends its deepest sympathy.
