Philip G. Nelson ’35
PHILIP G, NEISON, M.D., a noted psychiatrist, died Sept. 16, 1993, at his home in Greenville, N.C., where he had lived since 1960. Phil received his medical degree at the Catholic Univ. of Louvain, Belgium; his psychiatric training was at Duke. Phil held a number of important positions in the North Carolina Medical Societyhe was chairman of the mental health committee for 10 years and a member of the executive council for eight years.
Philip also served on an American Medical Society task force to improve health care in correctional institutions. He was appointed by the governor of North Carolina to head a committee investigating health problems at a women's correctional center in Raleigh. The annual Philip G. Nelson Award was established in his honor at the East Carolina School of Medicine. He retired in 1988. During WWII, he was a volunteer ambulance driver for the American Field Service.
In our 50th yearbook, he wrote "Princeton has always represented to me the best that there is in the world and, in troubled times, it was Princeton that seemed to be for me the source of strength and confidence in the future." Phil is survived by his widow, Karla W; a son, Dan; a daughter, Rosemary Nelson Kenny; and one grandchild. To each of them, the class extends its sincere sympathy.
