Philip Greafe Whitney ’52

Body

PHIL DIED Apr. 11, 1990, in Essex Fells, NJ. He was bornin Montclair, NJ., June 29, 1930, and came to Princeton from Deerfield Academy, where his interests ranged widely from drama and music to athletics. This diversity continued throughout his life, which was marked by a deep and quiet caring. For a while he managed a small theater company; he advised in the Junior Achievement program, and was active in and committed to St. Peter's Church in Essex Fells. His training and career were in chemical engineering; he worked for Goodrich in Ohio early and then became president of Surf Chemical in Hackettstown.

At Princeton he roomed with Ed Chorley and Fred Ailing. His undergraduate years were but a beginning of a lifetime concern with the University. He was chairman of the graduate board of trustees for his club, Campus; treasurer of the Princeton Graduate Inter-Club Council; a director of the Princeton Prospect Foundation; and was active in the schools and scholarship committees.

These are the outward signs of a deeply rooted life that he shared with his wife, Peg (Margaret Ackerman) who predeceased him. We miss them both and give thanks for their lives.
