Philip J. McCarthy died of pneumonia Oct. 10, 1994. He was 76. He had a brilliant career in economic and social statistics and polling. His formal education included an undergraduate degree from Cornell in 1939; he got his Ph.D. from Princeton in mathematics. He returned to Cornell in 1948 and rose to the chairmanship of the statistics department of the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations. He taught, wrote, and did consulting until he retired from Cornell in 1988. He continued to do consulting and writing for several years. His first wife, Mary Ann, died in 1967. He is survived by his second wife, Jane; a son; three daughters; a stepson; three stepdaughters; and 12 grandchildren. To all his family, friends, and former students, we extend warmest sympathy.
