Philip J. Nowland ’52
Phil Nowland died of complications from emphysema in Wilmington, Del., Dec. 14, 1994. His funeral was at Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he had been an elder and president of the board. In the 40th-reunion book, Phil wrote, "At age 61, I find myself playing a role I had no desire to play. After 30 years of heavy smoking, I quit; but it was too late .... So my unexpected role has become inspiring other people not to give and remain active." On oxygen around the clock for six years, Phil continued to work until last October.
Phil left Princeton midway through his junior year, and began a four-year hitch in the Navy. Upon discharge, he returned and graduated with a degree in history after attending the class's fifth reunion. He was a member of Cloister Inn. He returned to Wilmington and joined the brokerage firm founded by his father, Paul J. '18. He later became trust officer of Wilmington Trust Co. and, finally, a financial consultant for Wheat, First Securities Inc.
Phil prepared at Tower Hill School. He was a Paul Harris Fellow in the Wilmington Rotary Club, and was past-president of the Lincoln Club of Delaware. Phil loved music, singing in the Chapel choir and several “Brandywinner" productions.
Phil is survived by his wife, Sandra; his children Blair, Philip, and David; and sister Barbara Allison. To them, we offer our condolences.
