Phillip Dudley Reed ’67
PHILLIP D. REED, a beloved member of the Class of 1967, died suddenly, of a heart attack, Mar. 14, 1993, at his home in Connecticut.
Phil grew up in Marion, Ohio. At Princeton, he was a storied member of Tiger inn, where many of his closest bonds were formed. An outstanding student, Phil went on to Yale Law School, graduating in 1974.
A nationally recognized environmental lawyer, Phil began his distinguished career in the public interest sector, first working for the state of Connecticut, then as a research associate at the Environmental Law Institute in Washington, D.C., where he rose to editorinchief of the ENVIRONMENTAL LAW REPORTER. In 1986, Phil entered private practice with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in D.C. In 1991 he moved to New York as a partner heading their environmental practice. Phil also served as a director of the Southern Environmental Law Center.
Phil touched all who knew him. His infectious smile, selfdeprecating humor, and irrepressible spirit, leavened by a steadfast loyalty and gentle wisdom, were gifts to his friends and sources of strength, warmth, and love to his family. Phil was a unique character with a life force that death cannot extinguish, and which will live on in all who had the good fortune to know him.
Phil is survived by his widow, Elizabeth; his sons Jackson and Phillip; his mother, Elizabeth Reed; and his sisters Katherine Porter and Patricia. With all of them, we share a profound sense of loss at the passing of our friend.
