R. Webster Hilles Jr. ’33

Body

WEB HILLES died Mar. 13, 1993, at Waverly Heights, Gladwyne, Penn., where he had lived for several years, most recently in the nursing home.

Web was born Nov. 25, 1911, in Philadelphia. He later lived in Glen Ridge, N.J., before returning to Philadelphia. He prepared at Penn Charter.

In college, Web was manager of the soccer team and a member of Terrace. He roomed with Ship Troth and Art Claffy; and later with Blaine Platt.

After college, Web joined the firm of Towers, Perrin, Forster and Crosby, remaining with them until retirement, at which time he was C.E.O. In the '30s he studied law at night at Temple U., receiving his degree in 1939.

During WWII, Web was in the Army's Western Task Force. It was in this period Web met and married Margaret PlayfordFenn, in what has been described as the only Quaker wedding performed in Casablanca, Jan. 6, 1944.

Web and Bunny traveled a great deal, all over the world. Web was very active in Friends' affairs, especially with Friends' Hospital in Philadelphia.

In addition to Bunny, Web is survived by two daughters, Susan Geyelin and Wendy Gaunt; a sister and brother; and four grandchildren. Web was one of our most active members and will be sorely missed. The Class of'33 extends its deep sympathy to Bunny and the rest of the family.
