Raymond A. Ayres ’49

Body

Ray died Feb. 4, 2007. He was 79.

He prepared for Princeton at Staunton Military Academy. At Princeton, Ray majored in civil engineering and was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and Elm Club. He served in the Marine Corps from January to December 1945 and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War.

Ray’s career was in various branches of the concrete industry — testing, aggregate, and ready-mix. His major hobby was woodworking, and after his retirement in 1992, it became a full-time activity except for an occasional consulting assignment. He also enjoyed traveling.

Ray’s first wife died in 1974. They had three children: Barbara Smythe, Nancy Hajtovik, and Raymond A. Jr. Ray indicated that his life sort of stopped until 1985 when he married Betty, who also had three children. Together they had 11 grandchildren. The class extends its sincere sympathy to Ray’s family on its loss.
