Reginald Lamont Jones Jr. ’48

In his later years he was a highly respected public servant in Darien and for the state of Connecticut. He was elected to three terms as Darien’s state representative in Hartford. Following his service in the state legislature, he was appointed secretary of the Office of Policy and Management by Gov. John Rowland. Reg prepared the budget and supervised the state’s finances. He retired from public service in 1997.

Reg had a passion for education. He instituted a mentoring-tutoring program that was successful in combating the high number of dropouts in inner-city schools. In his 30 years with Arthur Andersen Consulting, he rose from auditor to managing partner of the New York metropolitan office. He played a pivotal role for the U.S. Treasury from 1975 to 1976 in devising financial controls that enabled New York City to access federal assistance and avoid bankruptcy.

Reg came to us with the Exeter contingent. At Princeton, he played varsity tennis and soccer, dined at Elm, and graduated with honors in economics.

Reg is survived by Judy, his wife of 51 years; and four sons, Reginald III, Ross, Andrew, and Gordon. The class offers deepest sympathy on the death of a loyal friend.
