Rene Rojas Galdames *50

Body

We were saddened to learn that Ambassador Rene Rojas Galdames, the minister of foreign affairs of the Republic of Chile, died on Oct 22, 1988, at the age of 69. After serving as attorney general in the Ministry of Justice and as secretary in the Presidency of the Republic, he en¬tered the foreign service in 1946. As a young lawyer in 1950, he earned his M.P.A. from the Woodrow Wilson School. Rene then served as third secretary of the Chi¬lean embassy in Argentina (1951), third secretary of the embassy in Turkey (1953), second secretary of the em¬bassy in Colombia (1954), second secretary of the em¬bassy in Great Britain (1956-61), consul and consul gen¬eral of the embassy in Italy (1962-67), and consul general in 1968. He held such important posts in the ministry as director of protocol and chief of staff. He then served as ambassador both to the Holy See and the Order of Malta (1971-73), as ambassador to Argentina (1973-78), and as ambassador to Spain (1978-80). In 1980, he became min¬ister of foreign affairs. During his distinguished career, he was honored with 23 medals.

Rene is survived by his widow, Margarita de Rojas Gal¬dames, and eight children. To them and to his many colleagues and friends we extend our deepest sympathy at the loss of this prominent statesman. He devoted his life to his nation's service.
