Richard Conrad Murphy ’55
DICK MURPHY died suddenly of a heart attack Oct. 16, 1992, in Norwalk, Conn. He and his wife of 36 years, Marjorie, lived in Westport, Conn.
Dick was born in Phoenix on June 20, 1934, but spent most of his early years in Denver, where he graduated from East H.S. in 195 1. There he was active in speech and drama. Dick entered Princeton with fellow East H.S. grads John Archibold, Bill Counts, Dick Frye, and Dick Smith. Dick majored in mathematics and received his A..B. in 1955. Following graduation from Princeton, he received a master's of science degree from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., and his doctorate in mathematical statistics from the Univ. of Connecticut. He was a fellow in the Society of Actuaries. He worked for two companies, Connecticut General Life insurance, for 20 years, and Buck Consultants, for 16 years, where he was director of research at the time of his death. In many ways, Dick was the true Renaissance man. He had an abiding interest in travel to national parks, art and art history, wild flowers, the Denver Broncos, and classical music and opera, especially the operas of Wagner, Verdi, and Beethoven. He liked to travel, enjoyed concerts, and desired to improve his skills on the piano.
At Princeton, Dick was a member of Dial Lodge and was active in a number of extracurricular activities. After Princeton, Dick was an active Christian layman, a man of faith, who was well respected by his peers, his many friends, and his coworkers.
To his widow, Marjorie; his two children, Kevin and Sharon; and his two grandsons, Matthew and Jonathan Helm; the Class of 1955 offers its deepest and most sincere condolences for a classmate who will be much missed.
