Richard D. Shelton ’31

Richard Douglas Shelton, who was born in St. Louis, died at his home in Ladue Feb. 2, 1995, after a long illness. He had a family farm near Sedalia, Mo. He prepared at St. Louis Country School. At Princeton, he ran track and was v.p. of Dial Lodge. After graduation, he earned an LL.D from Benton Law College in 1936.

He served for a time as treasurer of\V. G. Shelton Co. and continued as a director. He was also a director of Pennant Realty and worked for Shelton Hat Co. For 40 years, he was an investment counselor and was mayor of Ladue from 1967-75. Among his accomplishments while mayor were a one-cent city sales tax, building sidewalks, and arranging the pickup of leaves and brush.

He served in the Air Force June 1942-Sept. 1945 as an instructor in camouflage, leaving the service as a sergeant. He was active with the Sons of the Revolution and the Society of Colonial Wars. A longtime member of the board of Edgewood Children's Center, he also served as president of the board of directors of the Grand Jurors Assn. of St. Louis County.

He enjoyed Florida in March and sailing, swim­ming, and tennis in Michigan in August. Dick and his wife, Catherine Plant McKay, made trips with “Alumni Flights Abroad" to the Pacific Rim, South America, East Africa, and North Africa.

Surviving him are his widow, Kay; daughter Catherine Shelton Bollinger; and three grandchildren. The class offers its sincere sympathy to them for the loss of our esteemed and faithful classmate.
